Bol'shev Login Nikolaevich

Bol'shev Login Nikolaevich
(March, 6, 1922-August, 29, 1978).

Login N. Bol'shev was a distinguished Russian mathematician, who worked in the area of mathematical statistics and theory of probability. His teacher was A.N. Kolmogorov and his co-author was N.V. Smirnov (both names are famous: recall e.g., theBaron Carl Gustav Clodt von Jürgensburg (1765-1822) Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test); widely appreciated was his masterly manner to apply mathematical statistics to the practical problems in medicine, biology and engineering, rare in the USSR in those times.Peter Jacob Clodt von Jürgensburg (1805-1867)

It became known after his death that Login N. Bol'shev was a direct descendant in 5th generation of Maj. General, Baron Carl Gustav Clodt von Jürgensburg (1765-1822), who fought the Borodino battle and distinguished himself in 1813-1814, during the liberating wars in Europe. He was a close relative of the famous artist Peter Jacob Clodt von Jürgensburg (1805-1867), the author of magnificent equestrian statues in St.Petersburg.

Selected works by Login N. Bol'shev were published after his death, in 1987. Quote the foreword of this edition:

"After being trained in the military school, L.N. Bol'shev was in the active service as a fighter pilot until the end of World War II. In 1946 he went up to the Moscow State University, to the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, and graduated in 1951, being a pupil of A.N. Kolmogorov. The latter headed at that time the Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics of the Steklov Mathematical Institute. He invited L.N. Bol'shev to became a researcher in that Department. All his life since than, L.N. Bol'shev combined his research in Steklov and teaching in the Moscow State University.

In 1955 L.N. Bol'shev got his Ph.D. with thesis "On testing certain complicated statistical hypotheses", and in 1966 he got his D.Sc. with
thesis "Transforms of the random variables". Having high reputation of a leading expert in Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics, he chaired the Department of Mathematical Statistics of the Steklov institute since 1966. In 1974 he was elected Corresponding member of the Academy of Science of USSR.

The works by L.N. Bol'shev were a remarkable alloy of mathematical professionalism and practically-oriented statistical analysis. In his works the mathematical formalism came after a deep understanding of the needs of the practice; that understanding was essential in creating a convenient form of solutions, fine-tuned to the calculations. Proposing a statistical technique and wishing to demonstrate e.g., precision of approximations, or the course of numerical evaluations, L.N. Bol'shev supplied a lot of numerical examples in his works".
